Tips & Info

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Care instructions are provided with every item from our Goods section. Please follow our tips for eco-conscious care and you will enjoy your upcycled denim product for many years.

Clothing and Accessories

Turn your item inside out. Use a laundry bag.

Machine wash warm, delicate, with similar colors.

After washing, give it a shake to reshape it.

Do not tumble dry. Air-dry your item as follows to prolong its life and minimize your carbon footprint:

Clothing: Hang the item on a hanger to dry.

Bucket hats: Turn the hat upside down like a bowl and use a clothespin on each side of the brim to hang.

Handbags: Use a clothespin on each side of the bag to hang. Don’t hang on the shoulder strap to prevent sagging.

Toys: Tumble dry low, short cycle to fluff up the stuffing. Wash the toy’s clothing in warm water, regular cycle.

Once dry, your air-dried item might have some light wrinkling. There is no need to iron it: when you put it on, your body’s warmth will eliminate any creases in a natural way. Should you choose to iron, use the cotton setting and low steam.

Items with raw edges

After the first few washes, you might notice some fringe appearing around the seams and edges. Trim it or not - it’s your choice. Should you choose to trim the threads, be careful not to snip into the stitching.

Pillow Covers

Every pillow cover and bed spread comes to you fresh and clean: after making, we wash them in high-efficiency washer to remove any lint and line-dry them in fresh air (yep, we dry them outside!).

Denim is a very resilient and hardwearing fabric. It won’t stain easily, and with regular use, your pillow covers won’t need to be washed more often than once a year

Before washing, turn the pillow cover inside out.

Machine wash cold, delicate, using short cycle.

Wash with similar colors.

We use only pre-worn denim that has been laundered multiple times in its previous iteration, and once more by us, so color transfer is unlikely. But for extra protection, you may add half a cup of white vinegar (for a large load) when rinsing to help seal the color.

After washing, turn out the pillow cover while it’s still wet and give it a shake to reshape it and fluff the fringe.

Do not tumble dry. Air-dry your pillow cover to prolong its life and minimize your carbon footprint.

Once dry, your pillow cover will have some light wrinkling. We think there is no need to iron it; we ourselves don’t. The minimal wrinkling will disappear when you put the pillow insert in and lean on the pillow: your body’s warmth will eliminate any creases in a natural way. Should you choose to iron, use cotton setting and no steam. Don’t press over the fringe to keep it fluffy and expressive.

We advice against combing or brushing the fringe - it will not stay combed when you lean on the pillow anyway. But if you do, you will notice that combing produces lint, which means the fringe is disintegrating as you are unraveling its threads. If you absolutely must comb, do it very lightly, holding the comb perpendicular to the denim surface. That way you will avoid snagging and pulling. Lightly run a lint remover over the surface afterwords. Better yet, use your fingers as a comb to tousle the fringe and add character.

Flat Art Panel Care

Art panels with integrated frames: Do not wash. Do not dry clean.

If you feel you need to refresh your panels, take them off the wall and shake a few times to remove dust and liven up the fringe.

Art panels with fringe: We advice against combing or brushing the fringe. Combing produces lint, which means the fringe is disintegrating as you are unraveling its threads. If you’d like to arrange the fringe in a particular way, it’s best to tousle it with your fingers. It will add different character each time, so have fun!

ART HANGING AND DISPLAY

In most cases, hanging hardware is included with the purchase of art, but please keep in mind that it might not work for all types of walls.

When the item you are purchasing is shown mounted on a special back panel or a unique hanger, they are part of your purchase, and you will receive them together with the art, unless you specify otherwise. You always have an option to hang the art you purchased on a regular, commercial art hanging hardware, or any hardware that suits your taste and your home.

Flat art panels might lack the perfection you can expect from framed canvas, paper or wood-based art. If you like a particular item, but would prefer it having a precise, geometric shape, you can commission a framed version at an extra cost.

COLOR ACURACY

We reduce color editing in the pictures to a minimum to ensure accurate representation of the product. However the colors you see on the screen may differ from real life due to the differences in the individual screen settings.

PRODUCT SAFETY

We reuse buttons and metal furnishings from salvaged denim. Occasionally they might be small, that is why some small batch items in our shop are not suitable for children under three years of age.

ECOLOGICAL INITIATIVES

OUR PACKAGING

We use either upcycled or eco-friendly shipping materials to lower our environmental impact. Our cardboard packaging is easily recyclable and compostable, and our poly mailers are marine biodegradable. Please reuse the packaging where you can or recycle it.

Flat art panels ship rolled to reduce the size and volume of the package, take up less space on the vehicles thereby improving the carbon footprint.

Framed or stretched art ships in flat boxes.

Goods ship folded in the smallest package that fits them.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

We are mindful about our carbon footprint. Although it’s impossible to measure individual carbon dioxide emissions accurately, we take steps to proactively reduce ours as much as possible. You can participate in our efforts too: if you live in or near San Jose, we offer same day low carbon footprint courier delivery of your purchase. See more details in our Shipping section. We use only light packaging for these deliveries.

COLLABORATIONS AND COMMISSIONS

Innovation and exploration in craft & design are essential for the craft to transcend handmaking and stay relevant. At Denim Twice Studio, we are continuously evolving our techniques and investigating the possibilities for creative use of technology in our work. We are happy to collaborate and partner with other artist-designer-makers and entrepreneurs who share our ethos on projects informed by current environmental concerns. Let’s connect and create together.

If you have jeans you no longer wear and would like to have them remade into something special, we will be happy to work with you. Depending on the size and wear, one pair of jeans might not be enough to produce the item of your choice.
